The city council has finalized the purchase of two plots in Vallcarca, enabling the construction of 35 new public housing units. This initiative aims to enhance affordable living options in the area.

The Barcelona City Council has taken a significant step towards addressing housing shortages by acquiring two plots of land in Vallcarca, which will host a new municipal building with 35 affordable rental apartments. This acquisition marks a pivotal moment for the neighborhood, which has struggled with housing instability for decades.

The council now owns 100% of one plot located between Calendau and Argentera streets and holds a 58.61% stake in another plot between Cambrils and Argentera streets. Previously, these properties were fragmented among various private owners. The total investment for this project is estimated at 6 million euros, aimed at transforming these areas into accessible housing.

Laia Bonet, the first deputy mayor and district councilor for Gràcia, emphasized that this purchase unlocks a crucial piece of Vallcarca’s transformation plan. “This operation ensures that more residents can remain in their neighborhood while increasing the city’s public housing stock,” she stated. The apartments will be allocated through the Official Housing Protection Applicants Registry (RSHPO), ensuring they remain affordable rather than entering the free market.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the municipal government to revitalize Vallcarca, which includes enhancing green spaces and improving public areas. Currently, there are plans underway to construct an additional 47 affordable homes across two other sites within the neighborhood.

The ongoing urban development projects aim to deliver nearly 500 new homes, with approximately 40% designated as protected housing on municipal land. These efforts reflect Barcelona’s commitment to expanding its public housing portfolio significantly.

The city is also advancing infrastructure improvements alongside residential developments. Construction is currently underway on what is known as the Vallcarca service ring, which includes environmentally friendly urbanization efforts across several streets in the area.

This comprehensive approach not only addresses immediate housing needs but also prepares Vallcarca for future challenges related to climate change and urban density. The city plans to expropriate additional properties along Vallcarca Avenue to facilitate essential infrastructure projects like stormwater management systems.

As part of its long-term vision, Barcelona aims to deliver over 3,000 new public housing units by the end of this mandate while preparing land for an additional 10,000 units. The goal is ambitious: achieving a total of 15,000 public homes by 2027.

This strategic focus on increasing affordable housing options reflects Barcelona’s recognition of its growing population’s needs and its commitment to ensuring that all residents have access to dignified living conditions. For those interested in applying for these upcoming rental opportunities or learning more about ongoing projects in Vallcarca, further information can be found on the official IMHAB website or through local community centers.
