The iconic Pont del Petroli in Badalona is undergoing significant reconstruction as a floating platform is installed to facilitate repairs. This marks a pivotal moment in restoring the structure damaged by Storm Gloria in 2020.
The reconstruction of Badalona’s Pont del Petroli has entered a crucial phase with the recent installation of a floating platform, known as a pontoon, which will enable extensive repair work from the sea. This development is vital for restoring one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, which has been closed since severe damage occurred during Storm Gloria in 2020.
The pontoon measures 30 meters long and 18 meters wide and was towed approximately 1.5 kilometers from the Port of Badalona to its final location. It will be anchored to the seabed using four columns that rise 20 meters, ensuring stability throughout the rehabilitation process.
This marks the beginning of the most visible stage of construction, which commenced in May with an allocated budget of 4.08 million euros, funded by both Badalona City Council and the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB). The upcoming days will see demolition work on structurally compromised sections, removal of the old platform, and extraction of existing piles.
Following these initial steps, crews will reconstruct damaged sections and install a new final platform designed to withstand future storms more effectively. Daniel Gràcia, Deputy Mayor of Badalona, emphasized that this phase allows for assembling prefabricated components that will form part of the new structure. He described this day as “very important” for recovering one of Badalona’s most cherished symbols.
The complexity of this project cannot be overstated; Ramon Torra, AMB manager, highlighted both technical challenges and logistical hurdles associated with conducting such extensive work offshore. The new design aims not only to enhance resilience against storms but also reflects advanced engineering principles derived from studies conducted by the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC).
The redesigned structure promises improved hydrodynamics compared to its predecessor and will rest on eleven piles anchored about 12 meters deep. Additional rehabilitation efforts include repairing preserved beams, applying protective treatments across all surfaces, and renewing wooden flooring, railings, and lighting fixtures.
This latest phase signifies a decisive step towards revitalizing what many locals consider their most emblematic coastal space. Since its closure due to storm damage over three years ago, community anticipation has grown regarding its reopening.
