Rodalies train lines R2, R2 Nord, and R11 resumed service on Sunday following a significant disruption caused by a sinkhole in Vallbona. The incident, linked to railway construction work, raised safety concerns for commuters.
After several days of disruption, the Rodalies train lines R2, R2 Nord, and R11 are back in operation as of Sunday. These lines had been suspended since Wednesday due to a sinkhole that formed in the Vallbona neighborhood of Montcada i Reixac during ongoing railway construction.
The operator Renfe announced that preliminary tests were conducted on Saturday through what are known as ‘marchas blancas’—trains running without passengers—to ensure the infrastructure’s integrity and safety before fully resuming services. This proactive measure was crucial for restoring commuter confidence.
Renfe also indicated that there would be temporary speed restrictions in place when trains pass through the affected area. The infrastructure manager Adif confirmed that all necessary repairs to the ground have been completed and assured the public that no further ground movement or structural issues have occurred since the incident.
This sinkhole incident is reminiscent of previous disruptions caused by similar geological issues in urban areas. For instance, a notable case occurred in Madrid in 2018 when a sinkhole led to extensive delays across multiple metro lines for weeks.
In addition to these developments, another line—R3—faced interruptions over the weekend due to copper theft incidents. Although this issue has been resolved, travelers should expect delays averaging over 30 minutes between l’Hospitalet and Fabra i Puig stations.
