A new vocational training program for railway professionals will begin in Portbou, Girona, aiming to fill a critical skills gap in the sector. The initiative is backed by a partnership between local authorities and the Catalan government.
The historic town of Portbou, located in Girona, is set to become a key player in railway education with the introduction of a new vocational training program starting in the 2027-28 academic year. This initiative aims to train between 25 and 30 students annually, addressing the growing demand for skilled professionals in the railway sector.
The agreement was formalized on Friday by Esther Niubó, the Catalan Minister of Education, and Gael Rodríguez, the mayor of Portbou. This collaboration seeks to leverage the existing infrastructure at Portbou station, which serves as a vital transboundary mobility hub.
Niubó emphasized that Portbou’s strategic location makes it an ideal site for this educational endeavor. She stated, “This station is crucial as it acts as a gateway for goods and people moving between the Iberian Peninsula and Europe.” The establishment of this program aligns with broader efforts within Catalonia to enhance its railway strategy from educational foundations.
The project represents an investment of €480,000, which will be used to renovate an unused building adjacent to the passenger terminal known as Antiguo Economato. Rodríguez noted that this facility will provide essential resources for students, including access to both Iberian and European gauge tracks that are perfect for practical training sessions.
This vocational program is part of a larger network of similar initiatives across Catalonia aimed at developing expertise within various sectors related to rail transport. According to Niubó, there is an urgent need for hundreds of qualified professionals within this field.
Pere Macias, who oversees regional commuter services, also attended the signing ceremony. He highlighted ongoing efforts by the Generalitat de Catalunya to restore conventional rail connections with Europe. This development not only enhances Portbou’s significance but also complements future routes connecting Girona with Perpiñán in France.
The introduction of this vocational training course marks a significant step forward for both Portbou and Catalonia’s transportation sector. It reflects a proactive approach towards meeting labor market demands while utilizing local resources effectively.
