The Lloret de Mar coastline will undergo significant renovations to enhance its resilience against climate change, with construction set to begin in early 2027. This initiative follows years of damage from severe storms.
In a proactive move to combat the effects of climate change, the Department of Territori has announced a comprehensive renovation plan for the Fenals promenade in Lloret de Mar. This project aims to fortify the coastal area, which has suffered extensive damage due to recent severe weather events.
Severe weather prompts urgent repairs
The Fenals promenade has faced multiple challenges over the years, particularly from storms that have weakened its structure. Notably, in 2024, approximately 100 meters of the walkway collapsed, prompting emergency repairs costing around 1.8 million euros. These repairs involved replacing 250 meters of retaining wall and restoring essential public services such as drainage and lighting.
New study to guide renovation efforts
The upcoming renovations will be informed by a detailed study on coastal dynamics and climate impact on Fenals beach. Sílvia Paneque, the consellera de Territori, emphasized that “the extent of the work will depend significantly on this study’s findings.” The aim is not only to repair but also to enhance the promenade’s ability to withstand increasingly frequent extreme weather events.
Investment in community infrastructure
The Generalitat has allocated 2.2 million euros for this integral improvement project covering about 570 meters of the northern section of the promenade. The project is expected to be drafted by year-end before being handed over to local authorities for implementation.
A more welcoming space for residents and visitors
This renovation is designed not just for structural integrity but also aims at creating a more pleasant environment for both locals and tourists. Paneque stated that enhancing resilience against storms will contribute to making the promenade “more friendly” for residents while ensuring safety during peak tourist seasons.
The planned improvements include repairing existing walls, resurfacing pavements, and restoring utilities affected during construction. Additionally, sand replenishment will be undertaken to protect coastal defenses further.
