The Generalitat has launched a vital project to rebuild the flood defense wall in Massalcoreig, addressing long-standing concerns from local farmers. This initiative aims to protect agricultural land from future flooding risks.

In a significant move to enhance flood protection, the Generalitat has commenced the reconstruction of a critical containment wall at Sot del Cinca in Massalcoreig, located in the Segrià region of Lleida. This initiative responds directly to persistent flooding issues that have plagued local agricultural lands, particularly affecting fruit farms.

The project involves rebuilding a wall that stretches 35 meters in length and rises 5 meters high. The total cost of this endeavor is approximately €50,000. During her visit to the construction site, Núria Gil, the delegate of the Govern in Lleida, emphasized that this work addresses longstanding requests from both municipalities and local landowners.

Recent years have seen several severe floods due to rising river levels, with one notable incident occurring in March 2024 that inundated over 20 hectares of farmland. Such events have underscored the urgent need for effective flood management solutions in this vulnerable area.

This reconstruction effort is complemented by an earlier project completed by the Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro (CHE) in 2025. They constructed a 300-meter-long overflow channel at the confluence of the Cinca and Segre rivers. This channel was designed to increase drainage capacity and alleviate water pressure where these two rivers meet.

The combination of these two projects is expected to significantly mitigate flooding risks for agricultural properties along Sot del Cinca. Given that this region lies at an elevation similar to that of the Cinca River itself, implementing robust protective measures is essential for safeguarding its agricultural viability.

The ongoing reconstruction efforts are not just about repairing infrastructure; they represent a proactive approach towards environmental resilience and community safety. Local farmers can anticipate improved conditions as these enhancements take effect.

The completion date for this vital project has not yet been announced; however, residents are encouraged to stay informed through municipal updates regarding progress and any potential disruptions during construction.
