Starting July 3, significant disruptions to tram services in Barcelona will occur due to urban transformation projects. The changes aim to enhance pedestrian spaces and public transport efficiency.
Beginning on July 3, residents and visitors in Barcelona will experience substantial disruptions to the tram services as the city embarks on a critical urban transformation project. This initiative focuses on enhancing the Glòries area and improving tram connectivity along the Diagonal, with an investment of 32.54 million euros. The construction aims to double the tramway tracks on Gran Via, which is expected to significantly impact lines T4, T5, and T6 throughout the summer.
The construction is part of a broader strategy by the city council and the Autoritat del Transport Metropolità (ATM) to prioritize pedestrian space while optimizing public transport in one of Barcelona’s busiest traffic hubs. As a result, service interruptions will last until spring 2027, with partial cuts expected during this period.
The affected lines include:
T4: Service will be suspended between Verdaguer and El Maresme.
T5 and T6: No service between Ciutadella | Vila Olímpica and Sant Martí de Provençals.
To alleviate these disruptions, special shuttle buses will operate along affected routes, maintaining schedules similar to those of the trams. Specifically, there will be dedicated bus services for:
Buses for T4: Running between Verdaguer and El Maresme.
Buses for T5 and T6: Connecting Marina and Besòs.
In addition to shuttle buses, alternative metro options are available. The L4 line can serve passengers traveling between Besòs, Maresme, Selva de Mar, and Ciutadella; however, it is important to note that L4 will not stop at Verdaguer from July 6 through August 30 due to accessibility upgrades. Other transportation alternatives include metro lines L1 and L2 as well as various bus routes such as H12 and 7.
The recovery of full tram services is scheduled for September 14 when line T4 will resume operations between Verdaguer and Estació de Sant Adrià. Meanwhile, lines T5 and T6 are set to restore service from Ciutadella | Vila Olímpica to Glòries. However, partial cuts will continue for these lines until spring 2027; specifically affecting travel between Glòries and Sant Martí de Provençals until late September when only the segment from Glòries to Can Jaumandreu remains impacted.
This extensive construction project marks one of Barcelona’s most ambitious urban renewal efforts in recent years.
